BOUNDARIES REIMAGINED

Obviously, this collection of images is completely different than anything I’ve produced before. When the world closed in 2020, no amount of air miles could get me near to my beloved landscapes. Distances became measured in steps, not kilometres. My boundaries were closing in, but my art still needed to take flight. While trying to get some fresh air during those months of shutdowns, I couldn’t help but notice the gardens in my local ‘hood. The idea for this collection was borne out of Mother Nature’s feisty floral displays. My journey into photographic abstraction started when I was introduced to intentional camera movement (ICM). As I began experimenting with ICM, it caused a change in my relationship to my landscapes. These changes became even more evident to me as I photographed the plants and flowers on my walks. Marrying the influences of women like Georgia O’Keeffe and Judy Chicago to the concept of hard edged abstractionists like Hilma af Klint and Rita Letendre, I played with the images using software to stretch, distort, mirror and layer various elements. These organic inspirations were ultimately distilled down, abstracted into their basic elements of colours and shapes. The name of each piece indicates the source of my inspiration. For those who were overwhelmed by the silence of the pandemic isolation, these bold and vibrant images keep the silence at bay, and fill your heart and mind with a playful and joyous exuberance.

An interesting side note that I discovered while experimenting with these abstracts is that they translate brilliantly to other design platforms. For instance: want a one of a kind custom leather handbag? Are you a clothing designer, looking to add some zing to your turned cuffs or coat lining? Want to incorporate come Canadian art into a custom window covering or wallpaper? Think outside the box; reimagine the boundaries! Connect with me to collaborate on a special project.
